How to measure for Curtains and Blinds

At Creative Curtains all our readymade curtains are sold in pairs unless stated. The size of the curtains refers to each individual curtain, for example a 46" x 54" will contain two curtains both 46" wide and 54" drop. (These are ready mades and not made to measure and there can be slight variances in drop).

Measuring the width of your window

When measuring the width, you should measure the width of your curtain track or pole, not the width of the window. This will ensure a full fitting of your curtains. If you have yet to buy your track or pole, you will need to  allow 6" above your window and allow 5-6" either side of your window. This will allow your curtains to be drawn back from your window and will allow more light into your room. To give you a luxurious fitting, we recommend that the combined width of your curtains should be as close to double the size of your window as possible.

Size of track or pole up to 122cm up to 122-168cm up to 168-228cm up to 228-345cm

Measuring the length of your curtains

First decide where you would like the length of your curtains to finish.

  1. To the window sill......we suggest that sill length curtains finish (1.5cm) above the window sill.
  2. Below the sill............if you want the curtains below the sill, we recommend they finish 15cm below the sill, unless restricted by a radiator.
  3. To the floor..............we suggest that your curtains finish 1.5cm above the floor.

Please note when measuring curtains to hang from a pole, for pencil pleat curtains, measure from the eye at the bottom of the curtain ring.
For tab- top curtains measure from the top of the pole.
For eyelet curtains, please allow 1.5" extra on your drop as the curtains start above the pole.
When hanging your curtains from a track.......The same rule applies as above but measure from where the curtain gliders attach to the track.
The above are guidelines for your assistance only.

Measuring Nets

Measure the width of the window (in cm’s or use our inches to cm converter). Enter width into box and click on go. This will automatically work out the quantity of net required. This is based on double fullness, which is considered standard. If you require more than double please state this at time of ordering.
For the drop, you must measure from the very top of the recess to the window sill. Then deduct clearance for the top and bottom (0.5cm for top and 0.5cm for bottom is considered normal, though this can vary)
Please always measure twice before ordering, as if incorrect, no refunds or exchanges will be offered.

Roller Blinds

Firstly, you need to decide whether you want to fit your blinds in the window recess or to the outside of the window.
For the recess, simply measure the gap where the blinds are going to be and select your size that will cover your window, always go for the bigger size i.e: if your window is 95cm you will need to opt for the next size up, and trim your blind to size rather than using a 90cm and having a gap between the window and the wall.
(Fitting instructions included in pack)

Each person and house has their own individual circumstances, therefore our recommendations are as a guide only.

How to cut your blinds to size

Your roller blinds can be cut to fit your window in three easy steps:

  1. Measure the width of your window. If the blind is going inside the recess then you need to take 1cm off to allow it to fit inside. Please note that you will have to take into account the width of the brackets when deciding how much to reduce the blind by.
  2.  Once the blind is laid out fully unrolled on the floor, take a ruler and pencil and carefully mark the   amount required on the reverse side of the blind in several places before joining these with a straight line.
  3. Please remember to measure twice before you cut blind.

  4.  Now take a sharp pair of scissors and carefully follow the line you have drawn to remove the excess fabric. The plastic or aluminium bottom bar and cardboard or aluminium head rail are best cut with a small hacksaw. You are now ready to reinsert side controls and fit your roller blind. These blinds are best top or face fixed.
